Pastoral Care and House System

Healthy, positive relationships are a cornerstone of student life and wellbeing.

Our pastoral care program nurtures positive mindsets and a sense of spiritual connection in every student, ensuring they feel a genuine sense of belonging and are part of their immediate surroundings and the wider St Edmund’s community.

The House system was established at the College in 1994 and is based upon a vertically organised House System which supports students’ welfare and behaviour management, as well as providing opportunities for intra-school cultural and sporting competitions.

This system is intended to facilitate and support quality pastoral care of all the boys. Ideally, every boy will be well-known, involved, often encouraged and well-advised. Upon enrolment, each boy is placed in one of eight Houses.

The Houses are led by a House Dean who has a special responsibility for the students under their care. The House Dean develops a bond with the students and families of the Houses over a period of time. They also conduct both formal and informal interviews with the students to cover pastoral care, discipline and day-to-day organisation and may also assist with subject choices.

The House Dean is the first point of contact for parents/caregivers if concerns arise.

Within the House system, the students will be allocated into Pastoral Groups. The Pastoral Group Teacher meets with their students each morning, where the roll is marked. As a group, they pray together, listen to announcements and have the opportunity to interact across year levels.

In the spirit of reconciliation, St Edmund’s College acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
